There, the system was completely overhauled. The drum, with an impressive size of about 10 metres in diameter and 4 metres wide, was completely dismantled, inspected and rebuilt. This included fitting new filter elements, made of coated carbon steel combined with AISI 316 stainless steel. After the refurbishment, the drum screen was returned to the plant at Shell Pernis, accurately aligned and made operational again for long-term use. The plant is designed for a service life of at least 20 years and meets the refinery's high requirements. In addition to the drum filter, Hubert has also renovated several belt filters on behalf of Shell, making the entire cooling water intake system future-proof again. This tank processes more than 2 million litres of wastewater daily. This consists of an aluminium walkway of about 30 metres, spanning two-thirds of the 44-metre-wide post-sedimentation tank. Under this bridge is a stainless steel scraper construction, which ensures even and efficient disposal of the settled sludge. Besides the electro-mechanical part, Hubert also provided the safety facilities, including a maintenance platform, swim ladder and obstacle protection. Read more Elsham, North Lincolnshire (UK) For the Elsham water treatment plant, owned by Anglian Water, Hubert was commissioned to supply and install three microfilters (microstrainers). This English plant processes around 75 million litres of water daily, supplying a large part of North Lincolnshire with drinking water. The water intake of the River Ancholme was hampered for years by an explosive growth of zebra mussels. These mussels attach themselves to the steel intake pipes and cause severe blockages. The problem was so acute that up to six tonnes of shells had to be removed from the pipeline every month. To ensure the reliability of the water supply, an effective solution was needed that would stop mussels, plankton and blue-green algae without hampering production capacity and flow. These fine filters prevent mussel seed, plankton or blue-green algae from entering the system. The drums are placed in concrete pits or stainless steel tanks and rotate around a stationary hollow shaft. Attached to this shaft are funnel-shaped dirt traps that discharge the collected material. The screening panels consist of metal fabric and efficiently capture even very small particles. This system is designed to completely rid seawater of seaweed, jellyfish, plastic, wood, mussels and other coarse debris. Central to the system are four impressive Hubert drum filters that ensure efficient and continuous filtration of incoming seawater. Ahead of the drum screens are grids that hold back coarser debris. These grids are cleaned automatically with a grid cleaner on a monorail assembly, ensuring low maintenance and continuous operation of the system. To facilitate inspection and maintenance, sheet pile walls were supplied that allow the inlet channels and pump chambers to be closed quickly and safely. Hubert also supplied the spray water system for cleaning the filters and cathodic protection to protect underwater parts from corrosion. Designed for an uninterrupted operating life of over 18 months, this installation is one of the key components for the safe operation of the Flamanville reactors. What makes this project unique is the link between the houses and the surrounding greenhouse horticulture. Here, waste water is not seen as a residual flow, but as a valuable source for reuse. The houses will be equipped with a decentralised sanitation system, where grey and black wastewater are collected and treated separately. After treatment, the treated water - together with recovered fertilisers - is used in cultivation within the greenhouses. The result is a virtually closed water cycle in which domestic wastewater serves again as a raw material. Eventually, even drinking water is recovered from the system.
