Refurbishment of the drum filters at French nuclear power stations

In France, Hubert, in collaboration with its partner REEL International, carried out the replacement of the drum filters at the seawater intakes of the nuclear power station in Flamanville. This prestigious project highlights Hubert’s expertise in large-scale water intake systems operating under demanding conditions.

Hubert was selected to supply, install and commission vertical drum filters (known as drum screens) as part of the nuclear power station’s seawater intake system. These drum screens provide pre-filtration and fine filtration of the seawater used to cool the reactors. In the coming years, more of these drum screens will be replaced.

What we delivered

As part of this extensive refurbishment project, we replaced the existing drum filter, which provides protection by filtering out all unwanted particles from the incoming cooling water.

The new drum screen, weighing an impressive 165 tonnes and measuring 22 metres in diameter, ensures accurate pre-filtration of the seawater.

The drum filter was fully assembled, tested and installed on site in France as part of the power station’s existing system. Designed for uninterrupted operation for over 18 months, this installation is one of the key components ensuring the safe operation of the Flamanville reactors.

In addition to the main installation, Hubert also oversaw the refurbishment of the sprinkler system, the walkways and all the maintenance platforms. With the successful completion of the water and functional tests on site, this extraordinary project came to a spectacular conclusion after five years.
