Coarse Screen

A coarse screen is a pre-filtration screening system

A coarse screen is the first (primary) barrier within a water intake ‘screening train‘ and is intended to withstand and remove all large to relatively small contamination in an open channel water intake. Debris can be natural like seaweed and jelly fish, or man-made plastic, etc.

A coarse screen is basicly a robust static bar rack with or without an automated trash rake and dirt removal infrastructure. Distance between bars is usually 10 to 100 mm.

Hubert supplies various coarse screens tailored to every (local) situation. All screens are suitable for use in aggressive environments such as seawater.

A static bar screen can be used with an integrated cable based gripper (damran). Multiple static screens can be equipped with an automated trash rake gripper travelling in front of  and along the screens.  A static screen can also be equipped with compact and integrated high capacity revolving (rotating) trash rake (WISA) or rarely with a linear rake (KOBAR).

Below you will find an explanation of frequent applied coarse screens.

Hubert – Water Intake Systems

Hubert is specialized in water intake systems for cooling, drinking and process water

Hubert is market leader in water intake screening systems. These systems can be found in power stations, petrochemical plants and refineries, desalination plants, drinking water and irrigation plants and industrial production plants requiring a huge demand of process water. We supply complete ‘screening trains’ including all additional equipment, like controls and cathodic protection. We are active in both new construction (EPC) projects and renovation and optimization of existing water intakes.

Water intake systems are used for mechanically clean water extracted from the sea, rivers or lakes. See also Markets and Applications

This movie includes an animation of a typical water intake, showing the water flow from the suction from the sea to the arrival at the pumps.

This screen system is applied for pre-cleaning of relative small water flows in chanels with low water levels and is rarely used in water intake systems (sometimes in an inlet for low-scale drinking water production in a fresh water environment). Applications are more often found in the influent of wastewater treatment.

Design, Construction and Operation

The static bar screen retains the debris and the grab carriage or gripper elevates and discharges the waste to a container, concrete gutter, trailer or other designated area. Structures and components have been designed to withstand the hydrostatic force and different heads. This system can operate fully automated.

Design and Construction

The Hubert mobile DAMRAN bar screen consists of a traverse carriage with a raking mechnism. The raking mechanism moves on rail tracks along (mutilple) bar screens, which it cleans section by section over the whole width of the intake channel.

The rake is able to handle small spacing’s (less than 30 mm) and deep channels. This type cleans the coarse screen in the upwards stroke ( by winding the cable system) when the teeth are positioned between the bars of the screen and can be forced with the cable, resulting in optimal cleaning. Orientation of the screen can be almost 90°.

The mobile DAMRAN can also be fitted with a control platform or cabin with a control panel and a debris hopper.
