Solution to explosive mussel growth

For the Elsham water treatment plant, owned by Anglian Water, Hubert was commissioned to supply and install three microfilters (microstrainers). This English plant processes around 75 million litres of water daily, supplying a large part of North Lincolnshire with drinking water.

The Ancholme River's water intake was hampered for years by an explosive growth of zebra mussels. These mussels adhere to the steel intake pipes and cause severe blockages. The problem was so acute that up to six tonnes of shells had to be removed from the pipeline every month.

To ensure the reliability of the water supply, an effective solution was needed that stops mussels, plankton and blue-green algae, without hindering production capacity and flow.

What we delivered

For this project, Hubert designed, manufactured and installed three microfilters with a mesh size of 35 microns. These fine filters prevent mussel spat, plankton or blue-green algae from entering the system. The drums are housed in concrete pits or stainless steel tanks and rotate around a stationary hollow shaft. Funnel-shaped debris catchers are mounted on this shaft to discharge the collected material. The screening panels are made of wire mesh and efficiently capture even very small particles.

This solution eliminated the mussel problem at the inlet and guaranteed a stable flow of water to the water treatment plant.

““A single female mussel can produce as many as 500,000 larvae annually. At Elsham, as much as six tonnes of shells had to be removed from the filtration line every month.”
