Anglian Water / Elsham Water Treatment Centre

Potable water production plant

United Kingdom

Project introduction

For the Elsham water treatment plant owned by Anglian Water, Hubert was awarded the contract for delivery and installation of 3 micro strainers. The facility in Elsham processes 75 million litres (16.5 million gallons) of water every day. The plant supplies much of the drinking water for Northern Lincolnshire. Anglian Water had a lot of problems with zebra mussels that clog the water inlet pipe from the river Ancholme. The zebra mussel, Dreissena Polymorpha, is a specied of small freshwater Shellfish.

Hubert Supply

Hubert designed and manufactured microscreen drumfilters provided with a mesh opening of 35 micron to prevent zooplankton / mussel seed and blue-green Algae from entering the system.

The mussels live in the River Ancholme and as they pump the water up they attach themselves to the steel pipeline which caused serious blockages. They have lived in the River Ancholme for decades, but their numbers have increased rapidly over the last few years. A female mussel can produce 500,000 larvae each year. Six tonnes of shells from the filtration pipe were removed each month!

The drum is placed in a concrete pit and rotates on a stationary hollow shaft which is provided with one or more funnel-shaped debris collectors. The microscreen consists of a drum fitted along the circumference with screen panels. These screen panels are provided with metal woven fabric.
